Rising mortgage payments

Banking on advice

Sir, – You report comments made by Brian Hayes of the Banking & Payments Federation Ireland in which he offered advice on how to reduce monthly mortgage payments (“Irish monthly mortgage payments rose 12 per cent ahead of ECB rate hikes”, Business, November 18th).

His suggestions to increase the loan term and deposits are not just blindingly obvious mathematically but are massively patronising to all those struggling with this issue in the real world. It is akin to proposing that if you don’t buy a house it will cost you nothing.

What a loss to politics is Mr Hayes! – Yours, etc,

LIAM MEADE,
