Sir, – Further to “Listowel Writers’ Week subject of growing row over proposal to disband volunteer committee” (News, November 13th), of the few, solid foundation stones that have held Listowel Writers’ Week in place for the past 52 years, a significant one has been the commitment of a dedicated group of local volunteers. Each one of these volunteers has possessed an unfailing passion for writers and writing, thereby enriching the festival experience. Indeed, from its inception, the Listowel model has inspired and influenced many subsequent literary festivals across this island.
For both writer and visitor, this community-based spirit, a spirit which has always been inclusive, is what makes Listowel Writers’ Week unique. The interaction between committee members, locals, writers and visitors alike, is the lifeblood of this friendly and professionally run festival.
The sudden disbandment of the voluntary committee of 30 or so veteran members risks squandering the goodwill that is held in the hearts and minds of so many writers both here and abroad.
We call for the immediate reinstatement of the voluntary committee and ask that a dialogue be opened between all parties concerned before irreparable damage has been done. – Yours, etc,
