Boys and girls – innate differences

A chara, – Prof Emer Smyth of the Economic and Social Research Institute has conducted research which concludes that boys and girls exhibit different levels of interest in various activities (“Nine-year-old girls read more but play less sport than boys”, News, November 22nd).

Very groundbreaking, I am sure.

What I fail to understand is why Prof Smyth regards this as being problematic, noting that these children’s worlds are very “gendered” and that the situation has not “improved”.

The suggestion clearly is that the genders should be expected to behave identically.
