Sir, – A remarkable feature of this World Cup, on the field of play, is the amount of stoppage time added at the end of most games so far. While Fifa’s thinking on the issue is reasonable, especially with regard to curbing time wasting, it should have announced its intention earlier and have gone the whole hog by taking a leaf from the game of rugby and introducing a stop/start match clock visible to all. This would shift the focus to individuals feigning injury and otherwise trying to run down the clock and help cut out a much tolerated form of “foul play” in the beautiful game. – Yours, etc,
MICHAEL GANNON,
Kilkenny.
