Under the clock at Clerys

Dating etiquette

Sir, – Further to Michael O’Regan’s An Irishman’s Diary (November 23rd), the clock at Clerys was indeed a well-known place for couples on a date to meet. This was particularly so if they were going into Clerys ballroom to a dance. However, to meet “under the clock outside” usually meant he was going to pay for both of you, but there was also a clock inside the ballroom, and if he said “I’ll meet you under the clock inside”, that meant he was only going to pay for himself. – Yours, etc,
