Sir, – Naoimi O’ Leary’s excellent article “Wolves hunted by political pack” (World, December 1st) highlights the inconsistency between European expectations about wildlife conservation in less developed countries and practice at home. I had some experience of this on a wolf tracking trip in winter in Dalarna, Sweden, a few years back. Our group was physically attacked by local hunters. Their grievance was that wolves attacked their hunting dogs and disrupted their moose hunt. The rather obvious paradox of claiming hunting rights for people (and about 100,000 moose are shot every year in Sweden) while objecting to predation by native wolves was entirely missed. – Yours, etc,
