Sir, – Reading the various articles published regarding the opinion poll (December 3rd and 5th), it appears to me the poll is not as conclusive as it may first seem, given the high percentage of don’t knows. In fact this is not a great result for either nationalism or unionism, and it is clear it is very much all to play for. There is no clear, objective outline of what unification could look like, so people are merely answering a binary question, and having seen the still ongoing car crash that is Brexit, who can blame people for having so many concerns.

I remember saying in 2016 that referendums are generally driven by either the head or the heart and perhaps what we are seeing at the moment is merely an expression of the latter of the two. – Yours, etc,
