Sir, – Prof Garry O’Leary and Prof Brendan O’Leary write that the Ulster Unionist Party was “famously opposed” to the National Health Service (”Health service, economy and peace are key concerns about united Ireland”, Analysis, December 5th).
While it is true that some leading members of the Ulster Unionist Party were opposed to the extension to Northern Ireland of the postwar Labour government’s welfare and health reforms, provision for matching services was soon legislated for and implemented. Serious opposition soon disappeared. – Yours, etc,
CDC ARMSTRONG,
Belfast.
