Sir, – In the current sustained cold snap, wind farms have only provided around 5 per cent of the State’s electricity, owing to lack of wind. The overwhelming bulk has come from fossil fuels. Wind electricity may be economic when the wind blows, but the hidden cost is the huge capital cost of the 100 per cent back-up power stations and their stand-by staffing, etc. Thus we can be sure of permanently high electricity prices. – Yours, etc,
BILL BAILEY,
Ballineen,
Co Cork.
