Sir, – The killing of Pte Seán Rooney and injuries to Trooper Shane Kearney are a tragedy for Ireland as well as a devastation for their families. The exact circumstances of the situation have yet to be clarified, but certain facts remain indisputable – these men were serving their country with pride and courage, and that should be acknowledged and appreciated by each of us. It is their sacrifice, along with that of all those men and women who serve as UN peacekeepers, which makes our world a safer place, and we are grateful to each one. – Yours, etc,
