Sir, – Some years ago I went to see an opera in one of the vast auditoriums along the Liffey. We sat up at the back and it was akin to sitting on my roof watching Lilliputians play table-tennis in my garden below. On another occasion I went to an outdoor concert where the artist, in his dotage, had decided to travel and play in Ireland. Unfortunately, for the crowd, the artist played his " new music”, which was dreadful. Any old music was drowned out by the choir of drunk fans who were, briefly, sent into a deceptive reverie. We left early. We searched for our car for half an hour and the same tune was being played.
Recently I went to see an amateur production of A Christmas Carol in Leeson Park in Dublin. I had also seen this in the Gate Theatre years ago. Other than the budget, there was little difference. Excellent acting and timing. That’s entertainment. – Yours, etc,
