Sir, – I was delighted to read about the proposed refurbishment of the 19th-century iron “Guinness bridge” which connected Mill Lane in Palmerstown with Farmleigh in the Phoenix Park (“Strawberry Beds bridge conservation to begin in weeks”, News, December 28th). Growing up in Palmerstown, the Mill Lane was a regular gathering place for local young people. Crossing the Liffey over the iron bridge to the Farmleigh estate, the barrier on that side was then easily bypassed.
I was astonished to read that a boardwalk restoration on the bridge was not to be included, yet two permanently closed metal gates were!
Reminds me of the restored Dún Laoghaire Baths without the baths.
If Farmleigh estate is now open to the public from the Phoenix Park, why should Palmerstown and other residents be deprived of access to what is a public amenity? – Yours, etc,
