Sir, – With the debate over the song Celtic Symphony raging once again, due to the unfortunate decision to play it at a Leinster rugby match, I feel that it is interesting how those who defend it lay claim to both sides of typical culture war rhetoric (“Unclear if Leinster face investigation for ‘Up the Ra’ song”, Sport, January 2nd). One the one hand, the song is framed as “punching up”, or as defiance of a colonial power. However, those who find it offensive are also decried as “snowflakes”. Needless to say, it’s unusual to hear these two arguments coming from the same side. It appears militant nationalism can be all things to all men. – Yours, etc,
