Sir, – On the subject of assaults on bus drivers in Tallaght and the forced curtailment of bus services to the area, there is at least one thing that could be done to help (“Dublin Bus services to west Tallaght suspended after woman driver ‘terrorised’ by ‘mob’”, News, January 12th).
On December 6th last, then-minister for justice Heather Humphreys, in Dáil debates, mentioned a range of measures that Government is to introduce, designed to prevent attacks on frontline workers.
Conviction for assaults on members of An Garda Síochána, prison officers and ambulance personnel will result in stiffer prison sentences.
If bus drivers were included in this category, I have no doubt that it would significantly reduce the assaults on them as they perform their vital service to the public. – Yours, etc,
