A jig for the Irish Giant

Musicians remember Charles Byrne

A chara, – Further to Gemma Tipton’s wonderful article outlining the unique life of Charles Byrne, the Irish Giant (“Will the Irish Giant get to rest in peace at last?”, January 14th), a further detail is that Byrne was held in such high regard by his community in south Co Derry that local fiddlers composed a double jig in his honour entitled The Irish Giant. This was passed to the current generation of fiddlers by the late Vincey McLaughlin of Ballymaguigan. It has made its way onto the stages of the world by the renowned band Altan and their recording of the same. – Is mise,
