A chara, – Further to Gemma Tipton’s wonderful article outlining the unique life of Charles Byrne, the Irish Giant (“Will the Irish Giant get to rest in peace at last?”, January 14th), a further detail is that Byrne was held in such high regard by his community in south Co Derry that local fiddlers composed a double jig in his honour entitled The Irish Giant. This was passed to the current generation of fiddlers by the late Vincey McLaughlin of Ballymaguigan.
