The unity debate

Concessions

Sir, – Frank Schnittger writes that “Unionists are welcome to join us, but they will be joining Ireland, not some lesser version and imitation of a bygone Britain” (Letters, January 23rd). It is odd that Mr Schnittger appears not to have realised that unionists by definition do not want to join a united Irish republic: their allegiance is to the United Kingdom. It is odd also that having made it clear that no concessions should be made to unionists, he goes on to write that he wants to make his country even more “inclusive than it already is”.

It would seem that he lacks any sense of irony. – Yours, etc,

CDC ARMSTRONG,

Belfast.
