Reforming the Leaving Cert

Fewer subjects but greater depth

Sir, – Rather than trying to make the Leaving Cert more manageable by splitting some examination over two years, perhaps we could instead simply adopt a programme akin to the fully elective British A-levels for the senior cycle, in which the student studies four subjects at much greater depth than the current seven. This would allow students to focus on areas of interest that are actually relevant to their further education.

Of course, anyone who felt that four subject were not sufficiently broad would be free to take additional subjects at their own peril, as is already the case with the current Leaving Cert. – Yours, etc,

WILL BREEN,

Cork.
