Bertie Ahern’s legacy as taoiseach

A mixed bag

Sir, – David Carroll’s letter of February 15th provides a less than balanced assessment of Bertie Ahern’s legacy as taoiseach, despite calling for the same.

Mr Carroll argues that blaming the entire economic crash on one person or party is “reductive in the extreme” while simultaneously praising Ahern’s “pivotal role in bringing peace to the North”. Is it really balanced or reasonable for blame to be shared while praise is concentrated on one person? If we can’t attribute responsibility for the economic crash of 2008 on the party or leaders who were in power for over a decade before it, then who can we attribute responsibility to? – Yours, etc,
