Ireland’s flirtation with liberalism

Catering to global greed

Sir, – Our supposed status as an “end-of-history Fukuyama Island” is not only undermined by our changing stance on migration (Ronan McRea, “Ireland’s flirtation with liberalism may be coming to an end”, Opinion & Analysis, February 15th).

We are only grudgingly acknowledging to ourselves what the rest of the world has long recognised. Far from being a shining example of the success of globalism and capitalism, we are in fact a somewhat grubbier tax haven. We attract so much wealth and investment by catering to global greed. Ironically the impoverishment this causes elsewhere contributes to the surging migration figures. – Yours, etc,

PAUL CONNOLLY,

Cavan.
