War in Ukraine – time for a ceasefire

Awful prospect of nuclear war

Sir, – On February 15th, 2003, a coordinated day of protests was held across the world in which people in more than 600 cities marched and demonstrated in opposition to the imminent US/UK-led illegal invasion of Iraq.

The Peace and Neutrality Alliance played an active role in organising the march in Dublin where well over 125,000 people participated.

On February 24th, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, and Pana will continue to oppose this horrific illegal invasion of Ukraine on the very same basis.

As a neutral state, we should use our independent position to seek a ceasefire and peace negotiations in all wars. Instead, our new Minister of Foreign Affairs continues to allow US war planes refuel at Shannon Airport, and is now undermining the rules and the authority of the United Nations by seeking to destroy the triple lock.

The war on Iraq was based on a lie, propagated by mainstream media, that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. This is not the case with Russia. As the war in Ukraine continues, the war propaganda and the weapons being used by Nato and Russia will escalate to the point where the use of nuclear weapons may become an acceptable reality. – Yours, etc,

Chair,

Neutrality Alliance,
