Sir, – I read with interest the comments made by various readers in the Pricewatch article in relation to the cashless society (“Has the demise of cash been exaggerated?”, March 6th). None of them wanted a cashless society, yet the majority of them admitted that they rarely, if ever, used cash. These people need to realise that it is they who are directly responsible for the increase of the “card only” outlets and the inevitable establishment of the cashless society. In justifying their “card only” policy, these outlets can point to the fact that most of their customers do not use cash. If people don’t want a cashless environment, they need to start using cash as much as possible. If ever the term “voting with your feet” has any relevance, it is now. People should boycott these “card only” outlets. They have taken away the customer’s choice of how to pay, purely for their own convenience, and not that of their customers. – Yours, etc,
