A chara, – Further to Ray Murphy’s letter of April 22nd regarding the largely unknown requirement to board Iarnród Éireann trains at least two minutes before departure, I recently boarded my train at Dublin’s Heuston Station, and a friend I was travelling with arrived a few minutes later after printing his pre-booked ticket in the station. On arriving at the platform, he pressed the button to open the train door. The door remained closed. A member of staff on the platform came over to inform him that the train – the one in front of his very eyes – had already left! Could this perhaps be described as Schrödinger’s train? At that moment in time he had both missed and not missed the train! The train, in fact, left the platform about a minute later. – Is mise,
