Public pianos – on a lighter note

Tickling the ivories

Sir, – I refer to “When historians talk about the public piano, they’ll ask: ‘What were they thinking?’”, Life & Arts, May 3rd). These pianos provide access to musical instruments for members of the public who may otherwise not have use of an acoustic piano. It is with delight I see their popularity rise. I recently tuned Ireland’s newest public piano in Longford Shopping Centre. The tuning process took far longer than the norm due to the number of people stopping to express their thrill that the town had a public piano. Public pianos across Ireland create events for local music societies, fundraising and allow new spaces for performances in our communities. I will happily listen to any song played on a piano over the drone of diesel train engines and service delay announcements in our train stations. – Yours, etc,
