Sir, – Last week I passed through Cork Airport. Early than anticipated for my flight, I had over three hours to kill.
I went to the counter of the nearest coffee shop and, as a vegetarian, chose an egg and cress sandwich. Well, I think I’ve discovered the goose or rather the chicken that laid the golden egg. I paid €6.15 for a white egg and cress sandwich. This equates to £5.40 in sterling. In Luton Airport (my destination), an equivalent sandwich is less than half this price.
People have asked me why I bought it. Well, my defence is I that I was hungry and had three hours to kill. I do hope the Irish farmers are getting paid fairly for their eggs. Now I look at my half-dozen eggs on my counter top and suddenly have great respect for these oval gems. – Yours, etc,
