Sir, – On Wednesday, May 3rd, the Abbey Theatre in Dublin played to a packed house for a one-off midweek matinee of Ibsen’s Ghosts. Matinees always sell well, but at the Abbey it seems they are reserved for Saturdays only. This summer, a new play from Marina Carr, Girl on an Altar, does not have a single midweek matinee scheduled in a six-week run. Hotel costs make going to Dublin for a night out at the theatre impossible. The Abbey is heavily subsidised by the public purse and should accommodate theatre-goers from outside Dublin with midweek matinees, not just Saturdays. – Yours, etc,
BRENDAN QUINN,
Enniscrone,
Sligo.
