Sir, – Often when travelling, I’ve been struck by an organisational absurdity, or inefficiency. I’ll frequently park at a location close to the airport, at a potential cost of hundreds of euro, as I depart. And on arrival, I’ll spend a sum that can run into thousands renting a different car to use while abroad. Meanwhile, on the opposite flights, other people will do the same, parking at the airport where I rent, and vice versa. At periods of high demand, which seems to now mean during and around summer time, rental cars cannot be had and these essential parking spaces are all full.
Home-exchange websites and services, Airbnb or holiday-based ones, are widespread and have existed for years. Surely an automotive equivalent should be possible? The logistical challenges of insurance and valeting apply to the car rental market already, and if the NCT is fit for purpose all our cars should be safe to drive. Indeed, perhaps an insurance company could innovate in this market and produce a product to match car swaps between experienced and safe drivers? If the many cars parked while families take two- or three-week holidays were rented for just one of those weeks, the owners might break even on their parking at least. Large numbers of spaces might be freed up and the car rental companies should be able to meet demand. Also, there might be fewer dead batteries for those arriving home from their travels. Finally, fewer cars would need to be manufactured or brought into existence, with significant environmental benefits for us all. – Yours, etc,
