Sir, – The inexcusable delays and deficiencies in NCT testing in this country can only be solved by abolishing the current system. It should be replaced by the model which applies in England, Scotland and Wales, soon to be applied in Northern Ireland, whereby many thousands of local garages are licensed to carry out the MOT (Ministry of Transport) test, at a fixed price, backed up by thousands of trained testers. This approach keeps delays to a minimum and if a car fails, in most cases, the garage can remedy the defects there and then without the inconvenience or expense of a retest and more unnecessary car journeys. – Yours, etc,
MARTIN McDONALD,
Dublin 12.
