A chara, – Cllr John Kennedy’s thoughts on village design statements (Letters, June 9th) brought me back to my college days as a resident and bar worker in the then Avoca Bar and Restaurant in Blackrock.
Conversations with older residents on a Saturday morning involved them telling me they were “going into Dublin” for the day.
This spoke of their identification of Blackrock and its neighbouring city as two distinct urban areas. This was before the Ross O’Carroll Kelly-esque “going to Town” entered the lexicon. Sadly, the destruction of so many of our town and city councils, including our 900-year-old one in Kilkenny, has yet to be reversed by our Government, which promised to do so before next year’s local elections. – Is mise,
