Short supply of medicines is a costly game

A 200% mark-up on over-the-counter medicines

A Chara, – We have been told that many medicines are currently in “short supply”. Today our local chemist was unable to fill my prescription because the medicine was in short supply, indeed the manufacturer was not taking orders for it at the moment. When I asked her for an alternative, she offered me the very same medicine, over the counter, but at three times the prescription price. So it appears that the manufacturers are refusing to supply chemists at the lower, HSE-negotiated price; they would rather sell at a 200 per cent mark-up directly to the public. One for Conor Pope to investigate? – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL MARR,

Sutton.
