Focus on haemochromatosis

Welcome question

Sir, – As the chair of the Irish Haemochromatosis Association, which has the aim of raising awareness of Ireland’s most common genetic condition, we must commend the Department of Education and the author of the Leaving Certificate biology paper, Question 13, which tested students’ knowledge of genetics in the context of haemochromatosis, an inherited condition where iron levels in the body slowly build up over many years. This is the first time that haemochromatosis has appeared in the Leaving Cert biology paper. Well done to all the Leaving Cert students who did the exam – and we hope, now know a lot more about the genetics of haemochromatosis! – Yours, etc,

Dr MAURICE MANNING,

Chair,

Irish Haemochromatosis
