Sir, – I have just spent a few days in Prague, and noticed a lack of traffic jams and generally a lot fewer private cars on the road in comparison with Dublin. Anyone hazard to guess why that would be? Correct, like most other European cities there is a public transport system there. Firstly, three high-speed metro lines, a red, a yellow and a green line. Then there are about 50 tram lines at a guess. And a few buses to top it up. The result is that you get around the city in no time, no hassle.
So can I suggest that our city planners go to any European city to see a functioning transport system, and then get on with it? I suggest start with the metro and then build on it using trams (or Luas). It may cost a lot of money, but it will be worth it in the long term, and the longer we wait, the more we lose out. – Yours, etc,
