Lack of Irish sugar

Produce that can no longer be guaranteed Irish

Sir, – I am dealing with a bumper crop of soft fruits – strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants and gooseberries, with blackberries to come next month – all grown in my back garden. Unfortunately, however, the subsequent jams, jellies and preserves of these Irish-grown fruits cannot be labelled “guaranteed Irish” because since 2006 all sugar used in this country is imported. – Yours, etc,

TIM BRACKEN,

Cork.
