Prefabricated houses

Derry example

Sir, – With reference to Peter Coogan’s letter regarding postwar prefabricated houses in England, you need not travel to London or Birmingham to see examples of such houses (July 19th). The Glen Estate in Derry has numerous examples of such aluminium-framed prefab bungalows from that era.

Many of the houses have been bought from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive by their former tenants, so fond were they of the houses. It’s remarkable, especially when whole estates of traditionally built social housing from the 1960s and 1970s have been demolished, having been deemed unfit for habitation. – Yours, etc,

FRANCIS MORRISON,

Derry.
