Sir, – I read with dismay that Dublin City Council has begun moves to close a laneway between two major streets in Dublin 1 because of drug-related and other anti-social behaviour (News, July 20th). Is this the best our august local representatives can do?
It is wrong to surrender the streets to the few who have no respect for the rest of us. What is needed is for Dublin City Council to ensure proper policing, active street management, and endorse an addiction strategy that focuses on recovery, not harm reduction. Under its logic for problem-solving, perhaps Dublin City Council will consider closing other locations in Dublin such as Bedford Row, parts of Temple Bar, most of the quays between Westmoreland Street and Heuston Station, and a few other choice spots that offer locals and visitors the opportunity to participate in some of the worst human experiences in the capital. – Yours, etc,
