Changes to the Constitution

Words and action

Sir, – Regarding “Varadkar warns over housing right change to Constitution” (News, August 5th), Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is quoted as saying he did not know if the proposed referendum on the right to housing will happen within the life of the present Government. This, however, is but one of several issues where a referendum has been proposed at various times in the past. These issues include the status of women and equality in the Constitution, voting rights for Irish citizens living abroad, the public ownership of the nation’s water supply, the proportion of TDs to the current population level, and reform of the Seanad.

Will any of these issues be brought before the voters in a referendum during the life of the present Government, or that of the next government? – Yours, etc,

DAN DONOVAN,

Dungarvan,
