Sir, – Frank McNally’s struggle with the Rhode/ród/road conundrum of Co Offaly (An Irishman’s Diary, August 2nd) reminded me of living in Brisbane where the lengthy Rode Road (which runs alongside the dinky-di Downfall Creek Bushland Centre) is known as roadie road.
Whether Herr August von Rode, a 19th-century German missionary, would approve of the pronunciation of his eponymous thoroughfare is unknown. – Yours, etc,
