Verdict of the ballot box

Sir, – Micheál O’Cathail (Letters, August 18th) argues the democratic precedent of US presidential elections being decided at the ballot box justifies the millions of Americans who stand by Donald Trump despite Mr Trump’s numerous indictments. This is a confusing argument, as the US population has already rejected Mr Trump at the ballot box, and the recent federal and Georgian indictments relate to an alleged conspiracy led by Mr Trump to reject the will of the people, expressed democratically, and overturn the result of this election. I think it is very reasonable for The Irish Times (Editorial, August 15th), and anyone else, to query the frankly astonishing numbers of people in the US who continue to support a man who has proven himself incapable of respecting the fundamental tenet of US democracy, the peaceful handover of power following an election loss. – Yours, etc,
