Revenue’s data breaches

Corrective measures

Sir, – Ken Foxe’s report on the substantial mishandling of personal data by the Revenue Commissioners is concerning and highlights again what appears to be a persistently cavalier approach to the holding of sensitive information by public bodies (“Revenue discloses more than 370 data breaches in 18 months”, Business, August 19th).

What is perhaps most troubling in this instance is that Revenue’s focus seems set entirely on deflection and mitigation rather than on the implementation of corrective measures. There is no suggestion that they be tasked with the elimination of human error, but more than 370 breaches speaks more to a cultural laxity and systemic problem than human fallibility. Ultimately, addressing the issues at hand may serve them better than the hasty issuing of somewhat glib statements. – Yours, etc,
