Sir, – Ian O’Riordan in his piece on the late Jerry Kiernan quotes from the book Voices of Kerry (“Celebrating Jerry Kiernan’s lasting legacy and the sweet science he adored”, Sport, September 9th).
He describes the book as a “treasure of self-penned” conversations.
In the interest of accuracy, Voices of Kerry, published by Blackwater Press 1994 was penned by this journalist, as clearly set out on the cover and introduction.
Following lengthy taped interviews with 27 fine Kerrymen and Kerrywomen, the “treasure” was mined over many hours going through these interview tapes.

As the titles implies, the narrative is set out in the first person. After this long and demanding work was completed, the finished text was given to each to the 27 interviewees for approval.
Jerry Kiernan was a friend whom I ran with on the St Michael’s College, Listowel, athletics team. He gave me a lengthy interview in the Gresham Hotel for the book. It is great to learn from Ian’s fine piece that Jerry’s memory lives on through the Jerry Kiernan Foundation. – Yours, etc,
