Endless quest to sell us stuff

A chara, – Peter O’Halloran’s request to the advertising industry (“Long day’s journey into ad cliché”, Letters, September 12th) about misuse of the word “journey” will fall on deaf, or rather, uncomprehending ears.

Marketing jargon has long since infected every nook of our language, in its endless quest to sell us stuff; one of my recent pet hates is the ubiquitous use of grab to mean purchase, as if the item concerned was about to vanish. Another idiocy is the misuse of contemporary to mean modern; this has become so widespread that the former word now has two, contradictory meanings. – Is mise,
