Fairness and fee-paying schools

Opportunities

Sir, – Your editorial “The Irish Times view on ending subsidies for fee-paying schools: a change worth considering” (September 23rd) claimed that fee-paying schools are shut to students whose parents are unable to pay fees. The fact is that such fee-paying schools seek and acquire donations to fund such students. The private school on whose board I served, for instance, provides bursaries to families who cannot afford fees for up to 10 per cent of annual student intake.

My checks with other schools showed a similar openness to those who cannot pay fees. – Yours, etc,

Dr JOHN KEHOE,

Naas,
