Sir, – I am writing to draw attention to the hugely positive nationwide effect of the Irish Men’s Shed Association. Most people are familiar with the concept – to provide a space for men to meet and connect with one another. It is a simple idea but one that has proven to be life-changing for many people in many communities across the country.
It can be a real challenge to meet people and an even greater challenge to build up relationships and friendships. The sheds are a template for connection: a meeting point and the opportunity to meet others. No matter what changes in our fractured and beleaguered society, human connection will always be vitally important.
The shared space and shared experiences between the men in these groups is the catalyst for the development of real and enduring friendships.
Although the tea and chats act as a lynchpin to bring the group together and oil the machine of connection and conversation, it is the many activities and initiatives that the members create and participate in that help give the groups their meaning, purpose and direction.
Dublin riots left north inner city youth ‘traumatised’ by the stigma of violence
A helping hand with the cost of caring: what supports are available?
Matt Williams: Take a deep breath and see how Sam Prendergast copes with big Fiji test
New Irish citizens: ‘I hear the racist and xenophobic slurs on the streets. Everything is blamed on immigrants’
There is a focus on health and wellbeing within the groups with regular talks, workshops and classes run by experts to empower the members to increase their awareness and knowledge of how to mind their mental and physical health.
All in all, this is a vital initiative that people should be encouraged to support to engage with. At a time when it seems like many people are being forgotten about in society, it is reaffirming to witness people and the connection between people being prioritised and empowered. – Yours, etc,
