‘Back on her feet’

Stiff opposition for places on our juries?

Sir, – Charlie Kavanagh’s letter regarding his late mother’s summons to jury duty brought a smile to my face (“Checking the post”, Letters, October 26th).

It reminded me of the morning of my own mother’s funeral. We were just about to carry her coffin from her home for the short journey to the church, when her landline rang. In two minds, I decided to answer.

It was an occupational therapist from the HSE confirming a long-awaited appointment. Before I could interrupt her, she had rattled off the date and time, finishing with: “We’ll soon have Molly back on her feet.”

She was more than somewhat taken aback when I told her, through my laughter, that she would have a major job on her hands as we were just on our way to her funeral.

While the poor lady was mortified, my brother and I found it amusing and it was just the fillip we needed.

We were certain Molly, knowing her wicked sense of humour, was having a great chuckle about it too. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I gather from recent correspondence that a number of the dearly departed have been called for court service.

Are we to expect stiff opposition for places on our juries in the future? – Yours, etc,

EDWARD HARTY,

Bealadangan, Co Galway.
