Pronunciation questions

A chara, – Further to Ciarán O’Driscoll’s correspondence (Letters, November 1st) the storm and its name are also impacting on the lives of Ciaráns over here on mainland Europe.

France is bracing itself for a major storm with maximum alerts. To their credit the French have got the spelling right, including the fada on the second “a”.

The pronunciation is a challenge but they use an approximation, the name of the village of Cairanne, a beautiful Provençal village known for its very robust Côte du Rhône wine. It is an ill wind that blows no good ! – Is mise,
