Sir, – In response to Michael McDowell’s analysis of the likely influencing factors that may “push” the Taoiseach to call an early general election (“Prospect of early election looming large”, Opinion & Analysis, November 5th), one can only admire your columnist’s ability to entertain and speculate.
My view on this important issue is a little more simple, and I am almost sure it will be the number one reason behind the timing of the next election.
The key factor is what will secure the maximum number of seats to form the next government. Nothing more and nothing less.
It is reported, so far, that nine high-profile people from Fine Gael will not seek re-election, resulting in the need for early selections for replacements who will need time to be known, liked, and approved. Other factors, such as the benefits of the recent agreed budget, need to be rolled out first.
A helping hand with the cost of caring: what supports are available?

Michael McDowell highlights other issues such as the economy and the declining tax take. While these factors make for good speculation, I don’t believe that Leo will head for the nearest quiet place to contemplate them but will be advised by his own kitchen cabinet before jumping.
Where I do agree with Michael McDowell is that Leo Varadkar likes control. If he slips up with the wrong timing of dissolution of the Dáil, Simon Harris is ready and waiting.
Yes, it’s all about timing! – Yours, etc,
