Sir, – To think that our city authorities seemingly view an event like the Dublin marathon, which is such an admirable promotion of positive ownership of one’s physical and mental health, as an inconvenience is a pity. This would certainly leave us an outlier in the scheme of things, despite having one of the largest marathons in Europe, as outlined by Ian O’Riordan (“Dublin needs more of a New York state of mind when it comes to the marathon”, Sport, Analysis, November 5th).
I have been proud to see Dublin’s race called the “friendly marathon” because it is lined with people selflessly giving up their Sunday morning of the bank holiday to will us on and furnish us with much-needed sustenance. With the route having plenty of spectators along nearly the whole route now, it would suggest the people of our capital city enjoy a bit of disruption from time to time, for the right reasons. – Yours, etc,
