Seanad – extending the franchise

A painfully slow process

Sir, – It is welcome that the Government proposes to act to give all graduates a vote in Seanad elections by replacing the National University of Ireland and Trinity College Dublin panels with a new six-seat panel. It is unfortunate that this will not likely happen for two election cycles, meaning it will be 50 years since 500,600 people (92 per cent of the vote) voted for this in a referendum in 1979. Many of these citizens will be dead before any reform to the Seanad. All citizens should have a vote in Seanad elections but this will be a small step in the right direction for democracy. It is deeply concerning that no action was taken on this until Tomás Heneghan won his case in the Supreme Court. – Yours, etc
