Turning back the clocks

Time to end this folly

Sir, – The annual rigmarole of turning back the clocks, apart from causing much general inconvenience, seems like a form of cruel and unusual punishment. While the dark winter is tough enough to put up with as it is on this inclement isle, we are subjected to the further pain of having an hour of evening daylight deprived of us, just when we need it most.

On the other side of the coin, when the clocks go forward in spring, the incidence of heart attacks and car accidents increase worldwide, due to the effects of sleep deprivation. We are then provided with an extra hour of brightness during the time when the evenings are already quite bright.

Persisting with this seems like a form of lunacy. – Yours, etc,

Dr ALANIS CUSACK,
