‘The loneliest country in Europe’

Libraries as social hubs

Sir, – Keith Duggan’s article in your Weekend magazine was an interesting and thought-provoking read (“Why is Ireland, the land of a thousand welcomes, the loneliest country in Europe?” November 18th). He interviewed Ann-Marie Creaven, a psychologist at the University of Limerick, who laments the lack of “third spaces” that would be free to use in which people could meet. Pubs are such places but involve spending money. She proposes shelters in playgrounds, more parks, and states that teenagers have “nowhere they are allowed to be”. Nowhere in the entire three pages of the article were libraries mentioned. Public libraries are free, inclusive and welcoming spaces for all – even teenagers, and are hubs of the loose social connections that are critically important in the easing of feelings of loneliness. All that is required to join your local library are a photographic ID and a proof of address. – Yours, etc,
