Sir, – Louise Tobin comprehensively details the consuming issues that besets school leadership (“Stress and burnout – who would be a school principal?”, Education December 5th).

I have long been of the opinion that schools have become the spine of society.

Too often, when faced with societal issues, politicians have added so-called solutions to the school curriculum. In addition, stressed and overwhelmed teachers and principals create a culture of masked despondency that is picked up by schoolchildren.

Principals and teachers must be given true space to focus on teaching and inspiring a passion for learning. – Yours, etc,
